  • James Cameron has confirmed he will co-write a film adaptation of Joe Abercrombie’s new novel The Devils
  • The story follows a fantasy adventure set in an alternate medieval Europe with demons and witches
  • The filmmaker confirms he will write the film after Avatar: Fire and Ash

Acclaimed filmmaker James Cameron is stepping into a new fantasy realm as he confirms he will co-write the film adaptation of Joe Abercrombie’s recently released novel The Devils. The announcement was made by Cameron himself on social media

Cameron expressed his long-standing admiration for Abercrombie’s work, particularly his First Law series, but stated that the “freshness of the world and characters” in The Devils compelled him to acquire the rights and partner with the author. Abercrombie’s novel, which was published on May 6, 2025, quickly became a bestseller, described by Cameron as a “sharply witty horror adventure” and a “twisted, stylish, alt-universe middle-ages romp” about demons, witches, and monsters.

The film adaptation will be Cameron’s next project after he completes work on Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third installment in the franchise, which is slated for release on December 19, 2025. While it’s not yet confirmed if Cameron will direct The Devils himself, he expressed excitement about the writing process, noting Abercrombie’s visual and cinematic writing style. The novel is set in an alternate medieval Europe threatened by an imminent, flesh-hungry elvish invasion.
